Welcome to the UK Dumbo Rat Registry

Home of the 'Broadwaters Rat' project

Information

UKDR Breeders work co-operatively within the same breeding programme with the aim of developing a population of rats with the greatest gene diversity possible before moving to Phase Two of the project which in future will involve Clans of breeders managing their sector of the population by location.

We aim to prove that our model can improve the health and longevity of our companion rats, which has sadly been declining due to indiscriminate breeding and indeed planned inbreeding across different sectors for different purposes over many years. In future we hope to recruit pockets of like minded breeders from other areas and provide mentorship for these other co-operatives. Breeding for exhibition can lead to competition between breeders and we hope to show that breeding co-operatively in a similar way to conservation programmes, can benefit the species much more in the long term.

What You Will Find Here

This website is the Hub of the UKDR. You can find public records of our completely transparent breeding practices.

We believe that all breeders should show their breeding practices publicly and we aim to lead by example.

You will also find useful pages dedicated to supporting our community of Broadwaters Rat Owners. The wider rat keeping community are also welcome to use our free resources which aid in promoting a high standard in rat welfare.

AIMS

- To operate a multi rattery breeding programme

- To breed for the widest genetic diversity by managing a maternal line bred to a new buck each generation, thus maintaining 0% inbreeding coefficient

- To raise rats in a loving home environment who are interacted with and socialised to as high standard as possible before being placed aged 6-8 weeks into their new families.

- To offer an alternative to buying rats from pet shops or those farming rats/ breeding aimlessly

- To build our community of rat keepers when placing our surplus kittens into strictly pet homes. Offering lifetime support.

- To promote a high standard of welfare among our keepership and beyond

- To assist with rescuing and rehoming all rats in need where possible

- To encourage those breeding rodents as feeder items for reptiles to use a more suitable species such as Multimammate Mice, Mastomys natalensis. We deem rats to be a highly inappropriate choice due to an estimated 100,000 being kept as companion animals just like hamsters, rabbits, cats or dogs. Rats have been domesticated for hundreds of years and are interactive and loving pets.
